The exclusivity of fashion week can get a little tedious sometimes so it is always a breath of fresh air when we get to see some change in the form of London Collections: Men. It’s an opportunity for those fashion-forward men to sink their teeth into a bit of fresh style for the season ahead without having to wait it out through collection after collection of women’s clothes.
The fourth season of London Collections: Men was a huge success and there were a lot of different and interesting styles being showcased over the few days of the event. Everyone from Marks & Spencer to the tailors of Saville Row was showing their wares for the fashion-forward of London and there were over 50 shows held over the three days of style. During the past few seasons, there have been names such as Boris Johnson and the Prince of Wales offering their names to the male fashion week but this time around, the season was able to stand on its own two feet and wow us once again.
There are some trends that are seen almost every season but there were some surprises on the runway too. We’re so used to seeing new fashion trends for women that it’s a pleasant surprise for male fashion to get a shake up! Here are some of the most popular fashion trends seen on the A/W14 London Collections catwalk:
Tweed/Check: Tweed is so quintessentially British that I’m sure it’s actually illegal for it not to be included in any London fashion week and this was very clearly seen from the Saville Row, Woolmark and St James tailors. However checks took over this season and were seen on the catwalks at some of the biggest designers including Alexander McQueen who stuck very close to monochrome from the A/W season.
Bold Patterns: From Burberry to Christopher Kane, everyone was competing for the most prominent and bold patterns. Florals were a huge trend, though there were a lot of untraditional prints on a lot of the catwalks. Colour was also extremely important to make these pieces stand out as much as possible and you’re guaranteed to be wearing some bold colours and prints next season.
Sports Luxe: The sportswear trend was so popular this year on the catwalk and so many designers had different takes on the style. Nasir Mazhar created a collection that centred very much on boxing whereas Christopher Shannon had slimmer, cleaner lines that were reminiscent of running gear. Whichever way you choose to embrace to sports luxe theme, there is a designer had there that has just the option for you. This trend is full of bright colours and logos but it’s a completely different direction from Shannon’s usual style.
The Traditional Suit: The sharp suit can never go out of style and this season, it got that little bit sharper. Crombie, Rake, Chester Barrie, Duchamp, Kent and Curwen, you name the brand; they had some innovative creations based on the classic suit. There were some fabulous colours mixed in with the traditional cuts. From burgundy to aquamarine to tan, there is a whole host of new shades and styles for the A/W14 season that will update your look but still leave you looking slick.
London Collections: Men has delighted us yet again and served up even more fashionable treats for the season ahead. The fashion elite were mesmerised by this season’s male fashion and the countdown begins until the next event season starts!
