Its coming up to that time of year that no matter how much they deny it, singletons hate and sickening couples love. Even though I’m part of one of those sickening couples and delight in the fact that I’m getting a card and present this year, I’m approximately 1,500 miles away from my boyfriend this year so I can’t be part of one of those horribly affectionate couples that you hate to see, simpering at each other in a restaurant or holding hands walking down the street.
But whatever your relationship status is, there is always a plan you can have for Valentines Night, whether it be a romantic night in with the boyfriend or a mad night out with the girls (anti-valentines as I like to call it!). But the age-old question is, what do you wear?! Its a pretty easy answer for a romantic night in, cos the ‘less is more’ rule is apparently a winner in this situation but what can you wear with a night out with the girls on the pull, what music or movies are best for a romantic night in or what can you get your other half ? Valentines Day is full of questions that I hate answering ever year, whether single or attached, but with enough experience of every situation, I’ll try and do the best I can to help!
Night out with the girls:
You need a serious amount of cocktails, music and red lippie for Anti-Valentines and as the Geordies say, tash on with as many men as you like. Everything should be red (you’re being ironic of course!) so make like Carrie Bradshaw and start mixing those Cosmos!
Drinks: Lots of Cosmos or vodka or both…(depending on how hard-core you are) are essential for tonight. Get that friend we all have who thinks they are an amateur bartender to rustle up a few of these babies while you beautify yourselves. 40ml of vodka, 15ml of Cointreau, 15ml of fresh lime juice and 30ml of cranberry juice later, you’ve got yourself a lovely fresh cocktail!
Playlist: Bounce-Calvin Harris….no other reason that its an awesome song 😛 Rihanna-We Found Love (disregarding the title!) and ‘Death of Us’. Avicii-Levels, no better song to dance to. And of course, a bit of Jessie J and Tinie Tempah….cos who doesn’t love a dance to the two of them!
Outfit: This is the most important aspect of the night so choose wisely. Steer clear of red completely, we’re trying to be ironic, not a walking cliche. Try flirty little dresses that are bound to get you noticed, like this dress from Missguided.co.uk and extremely high heels, good for the posture and does wonders for your thighs! Top it off with a bit of red lipstick and you’re ready for whatever the night throws at you!
Romantic night in with your partner
Drinks: A few bottles of white wine or Prosecco if you’re feeling particularly celebratory about the occasion at hand. Pair it with a nice home-cooked meal or a decent takeaway (not advisable though if you want to look and feel your best and most svelte for the night ahead) and a bit of mood lighting and you’ve got yourself quite a a good evening planned…even better if you have cake….cos everyone loves cake!
Playlist: For when you’re eating your romantic dinner or chilling out after, whatever your preferences are. If you and your partner have a favourite song, that should probably go on it, I hear that kind of thing is important. Other songs like Jessie J-Domino, Kate Nash-Nicest Thing, Adele-Someone Like You or a bit of Barry White if that’s what you’re into, should all go on there for a relaxing evening. Steer clear of anything heavy-metal or rap, as your other half will probably attempt to sing along and it will kill the mood..indefinitely!
Outfit: The ‘less is more rule’ is probably the best way to look at this one and its whats underneath that counts. Investing in some decent lingerie is the right way to go and if you’re wearing some sexy underwear and a smile, you won’t be let down. If you want to spend a bit more, places like Victoria’s Secret have some pieces that are sure to be a sound investment. However, Marks and Spencer is always on hand if you need some last minute essentials in the lingerie department so nip down and see what you can find!
Gifts its probably safe to get her on Valentines Day….
Flowers: Never over-rated in my opinion, no matter how much a woman protests, unexpected flowers, especially roses or lilies are always a winner. Mind you, don’t pick them from your own garden. That’s just not on.
Underwear: Always a nice present to get, just make sure you get the right size…otherwise you’re in BIG trouble!
Jewellery: Jewellery is always appreciated, especially if you’re together a long time. However, if its a relatively new relationship, its advisable to double-check in her jewellery drawer to see what she wears because there is nothing worse for the self-esteem than buying a woman something she refuses to wear….and make sure she doesn’t have an allergy to anything, curvy women=good, looking like an inflated balloon=BAD!
Perfume: Great present, just try not to get it every year because after a few years, its starts to get a bit boring and you have way too many bottles of the same perfume lined up on your dresser. Also, be careful to get one that she will wear, its very hard to look enthusiastic about a bottle of perfume when it smells like de-icer, we do try though!
Card: Even if you’re not buying a present, remember to get a card!
Things its probably a bit dangerous to buy a woman on Valentines Day….
Chocolates: As much as most of us love chocolates, we know you only bought those because YOU like them and YOU will end up eating 90% of them….including our favourites. Don’t deny it, its just a fact, so to avoid all arguments, leave the chocolates in the shop.
Any household/DIY items: They will be thrown at your face. Enough said. Same goes with anything you or she needs, or the house needs, or anything practical. Not for Valentines. Not for birthdays. Not for Christmas. Not in the form of any occasion or present or you will and should suffer the consequences!
Clothes: Unless you’re Superman, you probably won’t get the size/colour/fabric/style right unless you have some drastically good luck or some help. Its best to steer clear of the clothing department for your girlfriend unless she has tried it on and ok’ed it first. Not very romantic, we know but its safer to do this and her to tell her friends you’re amazing, than you to get it horrendously wrong and ending up getting well acquainted with the couch for a couple of weeks. Trust me.
Anything with anti-ageing, cellulite or diet on it: I really hope no man is this stupid…but no, I’m assured this does happen. Unless her self-esteem is being boosted, you can cancel your chances of getting lucky, so buying anything that is designed to improve her is a big no-no. For your own safety!
Most importantly, enjoy! Follow the international rules and you’ll probably be safe 😀 if you don’t, good luck is all I can say!
