It’s a week later and I’m only getting round to writing about the Met Gala! It was such a hectic week last week that I couldn’t even think about getting round to blogging but I did keep up with the Met fashion of the rich and famous on Twitter. The Met Gala this year was far less disappointing than award season was and there were several dresses that I really did love walking up those red-carpeted stairs. There were some absolutely terrible dresses this year as well – we’re looking at you, Kate Upton and Shailene Woodley – but you can see those dresses anywhere, they will be fodder for tabloid journalism for years to come. I’d like to focus on the the dresses I loved and the brands that got a little more recognition that they usually do.
There was a good bit of buzz about the theme this year. The punk theme gave so many people so much to play around with last year but the Charles James couture dress code this year had a lot of people baffled. ‘White Tie and Decorations‘ was a narrow theme to play around with it but most people did their best and most of the A-list kept it simple with beautiful gowns and dinner jackets. See some of my favourite commentary on the Met Gala fashion on The Cut (my new favourite site), Vanity Fair and Vogue but for now, I’ll give you my own thoughts!
Both Kendall Jenner and Jourdan Dunn wore bespoke Topshop gowns and looked absolutely beautiful! Kendall did a very good job of nearly outshining her older sister Kim Kardashian at her debut Met Ball in this baby pink fishtail gown from Topshop, keeping the hair and make-up very simple to keep all the focus on the dress. Jourdan Dunn looked absolutely phenomenal and groomed in a canary yellow gown – again Topshop. The open front was impeccably cut so she still looked elegant and demure and the hair and make-up complemented her outfit. These models certainly know how to put an outfit together!
The Brit models were out in force for the fashion event of the year – which FYI, costs $25,000 for a ticket – and they were wearing some fabulous British designs. Suki Waterhouse, who has been dating the formidable Bradley Cooper for ages now, wore a pale pink frilly number from fashion house Burberry with a relaxed up-do and a slick of red lipstick which gave her that touch of Hollywood glamour. Cara Delevingne went with something unusual, a black crop top and white pants by Stella McCartney who got ready for the event with the designer. These two opposing outfits have both featured on best-dressed lists all over the world and you can certainly see why!
The fashion level from the models this year was pretty incredible and these two ladies are no exception. Arizona Muse looked regal in a lipstick red Ralph & Russo couture dress and very simple accessories, keeping all the attention on the full skirt and those fabulous toned arms! Karolina Kurkova was easily one of the best dressed of the night in an amazing Marchesa gown that looked more like a piece of art than a dress. This navy gown is a complete knockout and Karolina teamed it with the perfect hairstyle and accessories.
These are two of my favourite looks from the night and have been on every best dressed list I’ve seen! Both women have a beautiful vintage vibe about them and pull it off perfectly! Blake Lively looks like a greek goddess in this amazing Gucci gown. I think we can all agree, the addition of Ryan Reynolds made them the most stunning couple on the night! Dita von Teese accompanied Zac Posen on the night and is wearing one of his fabulous designs. Zac Posen designs always make a big appearance at these events and the Met Gala was no different. Dita looks out of this world and this vintage-style gown fits in perfectly with her overall image.
These two looks were both drastically different but equally beautiful and suited these ladies completely. Emma Stone looks gorgeous in this Thakoon ensemble – a crop top and maxi skirt which, while not sticking to the theme of the night, looked fantastic on her, especially with the delicate silver accessory details. Kim Kardashian had one of the more talked about looks last year and was no different this year but for very different reasons. Her floral get-up was just awful last year and this year, she looked fab in this plunging Lanvin number. This jewel tone made this gown a beautiful colour choice against her skin tone and I’m sure Kanye was a lot happier with his soon-to-be-bride’s choice!
Let me know your thoughts on the best and worst dressed, there was some much choice and variety this year that there is something for everyone!
Until next time,
